For over 20 years, Smartsheet has helped people and teams achieve–well, anything. From seamless work management to smart, scalable solutions, we’ve always worked with flow. We’re building tools that empower teams to automate the manual, uncover insights, and scale smarter. But more than that, we’re creating space– space to think big, take action, and unlock the kind of work that truly matters. Because when challenge meets purpose, and passion turns into progress, that’s magic at work, and it’s what we show up for everyday.

The Senior Director, Field Engineering leads the team responsible for translating Smartsheet's platform capabilities into real outcomes for enterprise customers. This role owns the full technical engagement lifecycle for strategic accounts, from pre-sales architecture and technical discovery through integration delivery, deployment, and handoff to customer success.

This is not a sales support role. It is an engineering leadership role with deep customer accountability. The team embeds with enterprise accounts, builds production-grade integrations, and creates the documentation and systems that customers can run independently long after the engagement ends. Every engagement should make the next one faster and the broader solutions organization smarter.

The right candidate is equally comfortable designing a multi-system integration architecture and presenting a technical roadmap to a CIO. They build playbooks, develop people, and close the loop between what happens in the field and how the platform evolves.

What You Will Do

Customer Engagements

  • Own the end-to-end technical engagement lifecycle for strategic accounts, including pre-sales architecture, technical discovery, integration design, deployment, and handoff to customer success.
  • Design and oversee multi-system integrations connecting Smartsheet to platforms like Salesforce, ServiceNow, SAP, Workday, and the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. Your team builds to production quality and documents for long-term customer ownership.
  • Hold the senior technical relationship at strategic accounts. This means credibility with CTO, CIO, and platform architect stakeholders, understanding their environment, and being the person they call when something needs to get done.
  • Partner with account executives and solutions consultants on strategic opportunities. Lead technical discovery, scope field engineering engagements, and ensure that what gets proposed is deliverable.
  • Navigate enterprise security and compliance requirements, including data governance reviews, SSO and identity integrations, and compliance framework validations such as SOC 2, FedRAMP, and HIPAA-adjacent reviews, without losing deal momentum.

Team and Platform

  • Recruit, develop, and retain a high-performing team of field engineers. Define career paths, set technical standards, and build an environment where engineers grow by solving the hardest customer problems.
  • Build and maintain a playbook library. Every engagement should produce reusable assets including integration templates, architecture blueprints, configuration guides, and runbooks that the solutions organization can deploy independently.
  • Drive the solutions force multiplier. Partner with the solutions organization so that field engineering patterns become repeatable practice. The ability of solutions consultants to deploy your team's best work without field engineering involvement is a core measure of success.
  • Close the product intelligence loop. Integration gaps, API limitations, and configuration friction surfaced through real enterprise deployments are some of the most valuable product feedback in the company. Make that feedback systematic and actionable.
  • Coordinate with the Forward Deployed AI Engineering team on complex accounts where AI capabilities and standard enterprise deployment overlap, ensuring customers get a unified technical experience.

What You Bring

Required

  • 8 to 12 years of enterprise software engineering or solutions engineering experience, with at least 3 years leading customer-facing technical teams.
  • Deep enterprise integration experience across platforms such as Salesforce, ServiceNow, SAP, Workday, Microsoft 365, and REST/GraphQL API patterns. You have designed and delivered integrations that enterprises depend on in production.
  • A track record of owning the enterprise technical relationship, including navigating complex procurement and security reviews and delivering against commitments under real pressure.
  • A default toward repeatability. You document as you go, and your team's best work does not stay inside the team.
  • Proven people leadership: you hire well, develop deliberately, and hold the bar on technical quality and customer commitment.
  • Strong executive communication skills. You can write an architecture document and a business case, and present both in the same meeting to a mixed technical and business audience.
  • Earns trust across product, engineering, and sales by being useful, not just agreeable. Cross-functional partners seek this person out because they move things forward, not because they have to.
  • Ability to travel domestic and international approximately 25–50% of the time.
  • Legally eligible to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis
  • BS or MS in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent industry experience

Nice to Have

  • Smartsheet platform experience in a production enterprise context.
  • Experience in regulated industries such as healthcare, financial services, or government, where compliance is a first-class engineering constraint.
  • Familiarity with agentic AI workflows, MCP, or AI-augmented enterprise deployments.
  • Experience in partner ecosystem delivery models with firms such as Deloitte, Accenture, or PwC.
  • AWS, Azure, or GCP cloud architecture certifications or hands-on infrastructure experience.
  • Pre-sales solutions engineering background at an enterprise SaaS company.

What Success Looks Like in Year One

  • The field engineering team is fully staffed and running a consistent engagement model from discovery through handoff.
  • A live playbook library with integration templates, architecture blueprints, and runbooks actively used by the solutions organization.
  • A measurable percentage of established patterns deployed independently by solutions consultants without field engineering involvement.
  • Net dollar retention for field engineering-engaged accounts above the portfolio baseline.
  • AE-reported improvement in technical close confidence tied to pre-sales field engineering partnership.
  • A systematic product intelligence loop: integration gaps and API limitations from field engagements are filing into product and engineering sprints on a consistent cadence.
  • Direct relationships with platform architects and technical decision-makers at five or more strategic accounts.
