Staff Software Engineer

Guideline is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our expanding engineering team. You will join a distributed team of remote employees and employees based near our offices. As a Backend Engineer on an agile team, you will build upon our growing line of products that bring the possibility of a safe retirement to more people.

What You Will Work On

• Scope projects and design systems architecture for usability and scaling our products.
• Develop features that improve complex processes and systems, making them more robust and performant with less human intervention.
• Build elegant software from the ground up by creating user interfaces, using message queuing infrastructure, streamlining operations and designing systems architecture.
• Proactively identify areas of improvement in the infrastructure, propose innovative solutions, and implement changes to continuously improve the development lifecycle and system health.
• Champion best practices in software development, including code reviews, test automation, and continuous integration, ensuring code quality and operational excellence.
• Write clear, comprehensive documentation for system architecture, design decisions, and operational procedures.
• Work with a group of passionate technologists to help automate administrative tasks and build unique solutions to solve our users' problems.

What We're Looking For

• 8+ years of professional experience designing, building, and maintaining large-scale backend software products and systems
• Expertise in Ruby programming language and Ruby on Rails web application framework
• Working knowledge of relational databases, database schema design, designing APIs, and security lifecycle best practices
• Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and performance tuning skills
• Familiarity with building and scaling a distributed systems environment built with Kubernetes, Docker, and GCP or similar tools

At Guideline, we believe compensation should be fair and equitable. We take a data-driven approach to set our compensation bands; the successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, and work location. These pay zones may be modified in the future.

• Metro+:
  The base salary range for this position is $183,500 - $274,500 annually.
• Metro:
  The base salary range for this position is $171,500 - $251,500 annually.
• National:
  The base salary range for this position is $158,000 - $245,000 annually.

In addition to base salary, this position is eligible to receive equity in the form of Incentive Stock Options (ISOs).
