At HubSpot, Senior Software Engineers (I) are strong individual contributors who consistently deliver high-quality backend systems and services. They have demonstrated technical competence, problem-solving ability, and autonomy in their work. As part of small, autonomous teams, they play a critical role in building scalable, reliable software that powers HubSpot’s customer platform.
What You’ll Do
- Design and build backend services using Java and other JVM languages (Kotlin, Scala, Clojure also transferable).
- Work across distributed systems and microservices, contributing to APIs, data pipelines, and event-driven architectures.
- Collaborate in small, autonomous teams (3–6 engineers, PM, and designer) to ship code quickly — often the same day.
- Solve complex technical problems independently: break down ambiguous requirements, design tractable solutions, and deliver them end-to-end.
- Own reliability and quality by resolving production issues, participating in on-call rotations, and advocating for scalable, fault-tolerant systems.
- Mentor teammates through code reviews, design discussions, and sharing best practices.
- Contribute to team culture by embodying HubSpot’s HEART values (Humble, Empathetic, Adaptable, Remarkable, Transparent) and supporting DEI&B in hiring and onboarding.
What We’re Looking For
- Strong backend development experience in Java (or other JVM language) and comfort with distributed systems, REST APIs, and microservices.
- Experience with databases (MySQL, NoSQL, Elasticsearch, Kafka, or similar technologies).
- Ability to work independently with minimal oversight while providing proactive updates.
- Demonstrated ownership of projects, from design through deployment and reliability.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills in a fast-moving environment.
Growing in This Role
The Senior SWE I role has significant room for growth as you deepen technical expertise and broaden your impact. Growth opportunities include:
- Expanding into broader system design and architecture.
- Mastering reliability, performance, and scalability of large-scale backend systems.
- Increasing mentorship and influence across adjacent teams.
- Taking on more product ownership, partnering with your Tech Lead, PM, and Designer.
- Serving as the technical lead on larger projects.
Career Paths
From this role, engineers commonly grow toward:
- Technical Lead (TL): Owning the technical direction and mentoring engineers on your team.
- Senior Software Engineer II: Expanding influence beyond your team with larger, more complex projects, mentoring across teams, and leading technical initiatives.
